Can you believe it? The first semester of school is nearly over! New backpacks, fresh paper, sharpened pencils, stylish back-to-school clothes…. The kids were prepared for the school year and are now settled into the new routine. You possibly (more like PROBABLY) spent countless hours scouring for everything on that back-to-school list to ensure that your child was prepared outwardly, and the newness of everything has worn off by now. One thing you can start any time of the year is making sure your kids are prepared for school each day on the inside as well as on the outside!
Children need healthy food to prepare their “insides” for the school day ahead of them. So here are a few SIMPLE tips for making their lunches both fun and nutritious.
Create with Color – Have you gone to the store and noticed that everything for kids is brightly colored and vibrant? That is because children are drawn to color! Make your kids’ lunches colorful and fun by adding brightly colored foods and napkins. When it looks exciting, kids will be more inclined to eat the food!
Shape Shifters – Bust out those cookie cutters! You can make your kids’ lunches less “blah” and more “wow” with fun shapes. While the doggie shaped sandwich has barked up the table for a few minutes, it is likely the dog will end up running its way into your child’s mouth.
Take a Dip – Most children enjoy having an interactive lunch. If they get to dip something, it becomes even more exciting. Try adding hummus and pretzels to your child’s lunch. Or maybe slice up some apples and let them take a dip in some yogurt. Chips and salsa anyone??
Smooth Sips – As adults, we feel very healthy when we’ve whipped up a smoothie for our breakfasts… but why do smoothies have to end at breakfast? Blend up a vitamin packed smoothie and pop it in the freezer over night. The next morning, throw it in your child’s lunchbox and it will be perfectly thawed by lunchtime!
Make it Note-able – Be an inspiration to your children in the middle of their day. Perhaps the most important thing you can do for them is to remind them how much you love them and how much GOD loves them. Perhaps leave them scripture verses to remind them of how they should act throughout the day: be kind, be loving, be encouraging, work unto the Lord and not unto men. All of these reminders will brighten your child’s day and refocus their minds while they are surrounded by worldly influences and do not have you to be their conscience.
The new children’s book by Lysa TerKeurst, Win or Lose I Love You, includes 10 Biblical Words of Wisdom at the end of the story, which would be perfect for lunchbox notes! She includes Luke 6:31, “Do to others as you would have them do to you,” and Colossians 3:23, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” The whole story contains a great message for kids, and the verses at the end encourage kids to love well and work hard—a perfect reminder for lunchtime!
