How to Write Your Own Family Christmas Prayer

write-a-family-christmas-prayerChristmas means twinkling lights and sparkling snowflakes. It also means time with family and remembering God’s gift of love. Christmas can also represent a time of prayer for children.

One sweet book that has taught my children about prayer is A Very Merry Christmas Prayer by Bonnie Jensen. And while it’s wonderful for my children to read about prayer, it’s even more important that they learn how to pray.

I decided this year I’d like my kids to write our own Christmas prayers. I came up with questions for each of them to fill in. Then the answers can be put together to create a unique Christmas prayer. Consider writing one with each child or together as a family.

Family Christmas Prayer Questions:

Something you are thankful for:

Something that brings you joy:

What excites you about Christmas this year:

One thing the gift of Jesus has done for you:

A song you want to sing to Jesus this year:

How you’d like to help others this Christmas.

Why Christmas is special to you this year:

Family Christmas Prayer Template:

Thank you, Lord, for _______________.

I have such joy because _______________.

This year I am excited about ______________.

And I am also thankful because ________________.

Lord, I pray that Christmas won’t just be about what I can get, but also about what I can give.

This Christmas my heart sings about ________________.

It’s exciting to know the angels are singing with me.

You’ve put it in my heart to help others by _________________.

May all I do this Christmas be done out of a heart of love.

In 2016, Christmas Day is special to me because ________________.

May the celebration of Jesus’ birth be the most important part.

Amen.

Consider writing out your child’s prayer and posting it for your family to see this Christmas. This is a beautiful tradition you can start this year and continue for the years to come. Can you imagine how special it would be to collect all these prayers in a journal and then look back at them over the years?! What a heritage of faith you can leave for your child and their children to come!

YOUR TURN!

Do you encourage your family to pray special prayers during the Christmas season?
