My Family’s Favorite Devotions for Kids

devotions for kids

Friends are always asking me my thoughts on my family’s favorite devotions for kids since they know I write for Tommy Nelson, but I’ve always found it so hard to pick just one!

After all, with so many great kids’ devotions for boys and girls of every age, it should come as no surprise that our family has collected quite a few devotional books for children over the past ten years.

So I went straight to the source to uncover these recommendations: my family! In the video below, you’ll hear from my daughter about which books have been our family’s favorite devotionals over the years and why. In the video my daughter and I have also recommended a few of our favorite devotions for kids from when my children were smaller, as well as her brother’s favorite too!

7 Favorite Devotions for Kids

1. Shine Your Light Devotional

The Shine Your Light Devotional is my daughter’s absolute favorite and the first devotional she read from cover to cover. Girls need to know that they can be bright, shining lights for God—and this devotional by Sheila Walsh will teach them to do so by thanking God, learning His Word, telling others about Him, and showing His love to everyone they meet.

2. God’s Little Princess Devotional Bible

Another devotional for girls by Sheila Walsh, God’s Little Princess Devotional Bible was one of my daughter’s first devotional Bibles that she claimed as her own. It can’t hurt to have a good dose of God’s truth combined with lots of sparkle to help your little girl blossom into the faithful princess she was created to be!

3. God’s Mighty Warrior Devotional Bible

The boy’s counterpart to the God’s Little Princess Devotional Bible, my son loved looking through this book for “God”, “Jesus” and other meaningful words to highlight from an early age. With this devotional Bible in storybook format, boys can learn how to be strong, honorable, courageous, and true.

4. Read & Share Devotional

Our family LOVES every book of the Read & Share series, but especially this one. It’s perfect for young families who are looking for tools to help them teach their children about God’s love and who want to make the most of the times they spend together. Each devotional contains a variety of topic introductions (ranging from songs and poems to recipes and stories), a Bible verse (short enough for a child to memorize), a Bible story, “Let’s Talk About It” questions, a “Share God’s Love” activity, a prayer, plus engaging four-color art.

5. Hide and Seek Devotional

From the moment my kids saw this eye-popping 3D lenticular cover, they were hooked! It’s an exceptional devotional that includes everything parents need to get their children excited about spending time with God. This book contains 52 Bible stories, devotions, verses, prayers, and a link for a free audio download of Scripture memory songs children will love singing along to. Narrated by Kirk Cameron, this full-length album reinforces the Bible verses and helps children commit them to memory.

6. Jesus Calling: 365 Devotions for Kids – Deluxe Edition

With more than 9 million copies of the Jesus Calling series sold, obviously this isn’t just a favorite devotional in our family! Tommy Nelson is now offering a deluxe version of this #1 bestseller that features a rich blue and orange leathersoft hardcover. It’s a beautiful package that parents and grandparents will be proud to give children year-round. The scripture and themes correspond with the daily reading in the adult version, so parents and kids can share spiritual time together.

7. Grace for the Moment: 365 Devotions for Kids

Grace for the Moment for Kids is our most dog-eared devotional at home since we keep it in our car to read on the way to school each day. Adapted from the bestselling devotional for adults (with more than 3 million copies sold), these devotions for kids present the message of God’s grace in a way that children can understand. And because giving grace is just as important as receiving it, a “Growing in Grace” opportunity accompanies each devotion, offering practical and easy-to-do activities to help kids apply God’s grace—every day and every moment.
