5 Verses to Pray with Your Family for Our Nation’s Leaders

There’s a whole lot of talk happening right now. I’m a talker, a verbal processor and communicator, so I get it. However, I once had a wise woman in my life say: “Have you prayed about it as much as you’ve talked about it?” Ouch. The truth can hurt.

My first response to any situation is to talk about it. If I love something, I want to tell people. If I’m bothered by something, I want to talk about it. I guess this is how I ended up as a writer! I want to talk about all the things, but talking isn’t always the best choice.

All you have to do is look at Twitter or Facebook to know that talk about our nation’s leadership and politics is everywhere. While some have good intentions, these conversations rarely end well. We are divided, and on all sides, we are upset and hurting. One thing we can do to help this is to take our conversations about our nation’s leaders offline and into real life, giving us the opportunity to discuss within relationship and not in the volatile online world. But there is something even more effective than all this talk:

Prayer.

I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them. Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity. 1 Timothy 2:1-2

For the purposes of this post, it does not matter to me one bit where you stand on the current state of politics in our country. If you are a Christian, you are called to pray for our nation’s leaders, even if you don’t like them. The end.

As parents, we should also be teaching our children to pray for our leaders. Reading a children’s book, such as God Bless Our Country for little ones, provides the perfect opening for prayer time for our country. The book centers around the celebration of the Fourth of July, but highlights the freedom and goodness of our land. Praying for this country that we love together would be a beautiful way to follow story time!

Here’s a few prayers for you and your family to pray for our nation’s leaders:

May the hearts of our leaders be transformed from to stone to flesh.

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. – Ezekiel 36:26

May our leaders serve the Lord and take refuge in Him.

Now therefore, O kings, be wise; be warned, O rulers of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling.  Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and you perish in the way, for his wrath is quickly kindled. Blessed are all who take refuge in him. – Psalm 2:10-12

May our leaders be humble and repentant.

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. – 2 Chronicles 7:14

May our leaders be led by the Holy Spirit in all that they do.

Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. -Zechariah 4:6

May our leaders seek and follow wise council.

Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety. -Proverbs 11:14

These verses are just a starting point. Pray daily and fervently – alone and with your children – for our nation, our leaders, and, most of all, for God to be glorified through it all. Leaders will rise and fall, but His glory will shine forever. Amen.
