Back-To-School Prayers

back-to-school prayersFocus on these four areas of back-to-school prayers for your kids’ journey through the year…friendships, academics, self-confidence, & their school and teachers.

It’s back to school time! Most of you are sending your kids back for another year of school. For this mom living in South Africa, my kids are returning after a month long Winter break. Whether it’s a new year or the middle of an existing school year, the same mixed emotions tend to rise…excitement, apprehension, trepidation, wonder.

The same goes for parents as we transition seasons. What will this school year be like? Will my child get the right teacher? Will the lessons be harder than last year? Our mind fills with questions that will only be answered as the year progresses.

Prayer is the lifeline that brings order to the chaos of emotions parents and kids feel as they embark on a new year. Prayer keeps us tied to the Creator and His desires for our kids. It also brings an element of calm to us which then brings peace to our kids.

As a mom of a son in high school and a daughter in junior high, there’s four areas where I focus my prayers as they journey throughout the school year…friendships, academics, self-confidence, and their school and teachers.

Pray for your children’s friendships.

One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Proverbs 18:24

Lord, I pray that my son/daughter would surround themselves with the right friends, friends that will encourage and lift them up with their words and their actions. I pray that they would also be an excellent friend to their peers choosing love and kindness even when it’s difficult. Amen.

Pray for your children’s academics.

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23, 24

Lord, I pray that, even when lessons are tough and my kids feel like giving up, that you will give them the strength to always do their very best. Help them to never give up but to work hard as it’s about You, Jesus. Amen.

Pray for your children’s self-confidence.

Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:16

Lord, I pray that, in an atmosphere where confidence can easily be shaken and insecurity can creep in, that you will help my children to remain confident in who they are in You. Help them to boldly stand up for what’s right and never be ashamed of You. May they be leaders, leading others to your throne of grace. Amen.

Pray for your children’s school and teachers.

I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. Psalm 32:8

Lord, as my children spend a good chunk of their day at school, I pray blessing over their school and their teachers. I pray refreshment over all the educators, and I pray that love and grace would exude from their lips. I pray my children would be a blessing in the classroom, contributing to an atmosphere of kindness, always being mindful of how to be helpful and serve where needed. Amen.
