3 Ways to Turn Winter Blues into Family Joy

We live in Michigan… to say that winter can sometimes seem looooonnnnng is a gross understatement. When you have to layer up so much you look like the kid from The Christmas Story (you know the kid who’s mom bundled him up so much he couldn’t put his arms down), it just doesn’t seem worth it to even go outside. And when you DO make it outside, your face hurts because the cold is sapping the life from your body.

Don’t mind me, I’ll just be hunkered down in my hooded sweatshirt, sipping hot tea and hiding under a blanket for the rest of season.

In all seriousness though, how do you beat the winter blues when the sun seems to hide for days and days on end? When the little gremlins seem to have gone stir crazy and you fear for your life (and theirs!! HAHA), what do you do? Here are a few ways we like to keep our home happy, warm and cozy when the world outside seems so drab and dark.

  1. Have a Dance Party! It’s amazing how much music can speak to your soul. Have you ever been moved to tears by a song? Have you ever listened to a worship song and been filled with awe and wonder at God’s presence? Have you ever heard a song that made you angry? Music is powerful! Use it for the good this winter. Positive, uplifting music can fill your home with a wonderful sound… and it won’t just be the notes of the music that you will hear, but the joyful laughter of your children as they twirl and hop and skip around the house. The Bible says to “make a joyful noise unto the Lord.” I can imagine that God will be smiling as he watches you all laughing and singing together.
  2. Plan a Family Night. Use these cold dark days to make your home bright and cozy. When the weather seems to be beating in on you, use the cover of a dark winter to bring your family closer. Stoke a fire, pop some popcorn, bring out the board games and spend the evening playing, talking and laughing together. These dark days don’t have to bring you down. Use these moments to soak up the family time… because inevitably when summer hits we will all be too busy soaking up the rays of the sun to all be this close and cozy.
  3. Get Outside. I know I just mentioned how cold it can be and how I’d much rather be cuddled up under a blanket, BUT let’s be honest… it’s not THAT cold. Bundle up. Put on those layers. Grab a warm hat, gloves, coat, snow pants and head outside! Take the kids sledding. Go for a walk/hike. Build a snowman. Construct an igloo. Get outside! You will be amazed at what a few minutes of fresh air can do for your mood… and you might just tire the little gremlins out too!

Winter can seem so dreary, but your home doesn’t have to be! Use this time to grow closer as a family. Be joyful. Be present. Make your home inviting… God might just show up and cuddle in by the fire with you and your family. Feel his presence. “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts.” Make winter be about family…. and include your heavenly Father!
