We’ve all heard that beauty is only skin deep. Modern culture is saturated with ads for makeup, skin care and the latest hair styles; all directing us to caring intensely for our outer mortal shells. The Bible does instruct us as Christians to take care of our bodies; after all, the Spirit of God resides in our hearts. For this reason, teaching preteen and teen girls to physically care for themselves is just as critical as it has ever been.
Eating healthy food, exercising properly, and enjoying life are all traits that Christian parents desire teenage girls to learn. After all, what we look like as daughters of the King is important; we want to reflect his image.
While beauty products focus on a person’s exterior, God focuses on the interior- the heart. It’s easy to notice when our physical bodies are not maintained, because we so readily see the effects, whether it be weight gain or loss, unkempt hair, or skin conditions. But evaluating the heart? While actions often reveal the heart of a person, no one except God truly knows the motives of a person.
For the LORD sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart. I Samuel 16:7
In a world with many claims to beauty, how do we find true beauty? Wonderfully, God gives us a few hints to help us understand the glamour of a gorgeous heart. By helping your tween or teen see true beauty as God sees it, you can foster the glamour of a heart like his.
Take a look at these principles that focus on fostering internal beauty.
1. Accepting instructions reveals a beautiful heart.
The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin. Proverbs 10:8
Whether listening in class or learning how to obey traffic laws, helping your teen learn the importance of following instructions is a critical life skill and a wonderful beauty tip.
2. Studying diligently is a characteristic of true inner beauty.
The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. Proverbs 15:14
Beauty sometimes means the simple choice of staying silent when the trend is to talk, whether in person or online relationships.
3. Giving the credit and glory to God for accomplishments displays true intentions.
The righteous will rejoice in the LORD and take refuge in him; all the upright in heart will glory in him! Psalm 64:10
Understanding the importance of giving God the glory for successes is always a beautiful thing!
4. Cultivating a beautiful heart produces lasting results.
Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the LORD will be greatly praised. Proverbs 31:30
While physical beauty doesn’t last forever, a gorgeous heart never fades away. This heart is one that loves Jesus wildly and loves others lavishly. This heart puts others needs first and serves graciously.
Perhaps the glamour of a gorgeous heart could be summed up in one word- grace.
How would you describe a beautiful heart?
