A Prayer for Mommy Friends

Friday, May 3rd, 2013

I have to admit that I have played many roles in my lifetime but being mom is most definitely the hardest one. With four kids, our house is well…. a circus and I am left to be the master of ceremonies, except somehow this MC at times has no control over her show!

prayer for

While I love my kids with all of my heart and I know that God gave me each one of these blessings to raise to be good people. It’s not easy, but I am up for the task that He has assigned me.

One of the most precious gifts that God has given me during my time as a mother, is awesome mommy friends. These are girls that I can cry with (my kid will not sleep!), ask questions without judgement (how do you get human poop out of carpet?) and just live life REAL.

Do you have mommy friends that help get you through motherhood? Say this prayer with me and let’s thank God for each of them.

Dear God,

Thank you so much for surrounding me with moms who are real. These are friends that understand where I am and while they cannot fix the situation, they stand by me without judgement and help me make it through this special time in my life.

Thank you God.

Amen.

If you have a special friend, make sure to drop them a note or text this Mother’s day and let them know how much their friendship means to you.

In search of mommy friends? Some of my best most authentic friends have come from our church’s moms group. Find a local group in your area, be open and honest and find moms who have children that are similar ages to yours (though, this is not a requirement!).

Do You Have a Special Group of Mommy Friends?

Looking for a sweet gift for your sweet friend? Check out Thank You God for Mommy. It’s a sweet book about a little panda that thanks God for his mommy. A gift, any mom will appreciate!

Let’s Talk About Lies!

Monday, April 8th, 2013

Oh parenting! Unfortunately, most days the WOES, far out way the YAYS! I know this is just a season of my life and I really am trying to appreciate each and every day with my children.

lies

One of the most recent WOES that my husband and I are scratching our heads is this issue of lying. Our two older kids, while they are truly great kids – have started telling little white lies… constantly. We can see the eye shifts and the uncomfortableness as they tell these little fibs. As much as it peeves us, we just want them to understand why this behavior cannot continue – even if the lie is as simple as, no I didn’t let the dog inside the house (okay, please explain who pooped on the carpet then!).

As parents, you want the best for your child. You want to raise, sincere – authentic children. When your child lies and breaks trust, all you want to do is fix the problem. That’s the position we are in right now.

I wish I had the magic answer to fix what we are dealing with. While I know it could be a lot worse, this is something we’d like to nip in the bud before they get any older and before the little lies become big lies.

Each instance of lying that we catch, we explain why lying is bad and what the bible says about being honest. We are also making to watch any white lies that may come from our mouths as parents.

Any Suggestions on Helping Your Children Be More Honest?

How Not to Confuse Your Child on Easter

Monday, March 18th, 2013

not to confuse your child on easter

Somewhere in the Bible it says a huge oversize rabbit hops from house to house sneaking in your front door laying plastic eggs and leaving your child baskets full of candy – all in honor of Jesus’ resurrection.

Oh, maybe that’s not the story.

Have you been to the store lately? The grocery aisles are filling up with candy, stuffed rabbits, plastic grass and Easter baskets. With my little ones in the cart, we can’t help but pass right by the aisle of Easter insanity. My kids’ go crazy as soon as they get a whiff of the sugar that you can’t help but smell it. Who wouldn’t want all of that chocolate??

On Sundays we go to church. My kids learn about Jesus. They are told of His resurrection and how He died for our sins and that we celebrate Easter in honor of these events.

Wait… Easter equals chocolate and Jesus? What is a little mind to think!!

While God created both Jesus and chocolate – those are two things that can be confusing in the context of teaching your child about Easter. It’s our responsibility as parents to help our children understand fact from fiction. With so many mixed messages, find a good balance in explaining secular Easter and the actual meaning of Easter. I’m not saying deprive your child of chocolate, but do help them understand why Easter is significant.

Check out the book, The Story of Easter. This is a great bedtime read. Encourage your children to ask questions. Be thorough in explaining why Easter is such an important holiday, but try not to confuse the message of Christ’s death and resurrection with a oversized rabbit leaving candy in a basket.

How Do You Explain Easter to Your Children?

While typically we may think of Valentine’s Day as a special day for you and your spouse, this year loop in your kids to make their day extra special to.

Here are 4 fun ways to make your kids feel loved this Valentine’s day!

Decorate the House
Cut out a few hearts and tape them on the walls. This doesn’t have to be fancy, but these added touches will help create an even more special day. The last few years, I’ve left a heart with a note on their door for our kids to see first thing in the morning on Valentine’s day.

Bake Cookies Together
One of the best gifts and ways to show love is spending time together. I have yet to meet a kid that doesn’t love cookies. Spend an hour of quality time together making cookies.

Small Gift
Valentine’s day doesn’t have to be expensive. Purchase a small gift that is meaningful to the love theme.
● Check out An I Love You Prayer. Write a sweet note with the date in the front of the book.

Valentines from Loved Ones
Send an email to close family members asking for them to write a note to your kids about how much you love them. Make it easy, just letting them email you back. Print them off and give them to your child on Valentine’s Day.

In addition to the love a parent provides for their child, it’s important to reinforce the unconditionally love of God. What better day to express God’s love than the day set aside for love, that happens to fall right between Christ’s birth and resurrection.

How do you make Valentine’s Day special for your kids?

5 Ways to Keep the Kids Busy on a Cold Day

Monday, January 28th, 2013

The cold winter months of winter are here. Even though we call Texas home – this winter has already brought us 2 snow falls and near freezing temperatures for the last several weeks. We were wearing shorts and flip flops up until November and them WHAM! COLD!

With 4 kids, finding indoor activities to keep everyone busy is a must — especially for our 2 toddlers who are home all day. If you are stuck in the cold and need a few ideas to help with keeping the kids busy, check out these 5 ideas:

5 Ways to Keep the Kids Busy on a Cold Day

At Home Movie Theater
No media room or fancy TV required… just a little imagination! Make some popcorn, create tickets and recreate the environment of a movie theater in the comforts of your own home.

Check out how this mom made a drive-in movie theater for her living room!
● Need a movie suggestion? Tommy Nelson has several great Christian titles for kids.

Go Bowling in the Kitchen
Our family loves to go bowling, but it’s expensive and the toddlers don’t last long because they can’t play. Setup a bowling alley in your kitchen! Using a few products from around the house, your kitchen can be converted to a bowling alley in minutes!

Story Time
While we try to read to the kids at night, throw an unexpected story time. Make sure to use different voices for all of the books characters and maybe throw in a prop or two to help make the story time extra special.

● One of our favorite books is the Three Little Pigs. It’s a story that never gets old and that can be acted out.

Have an Indoor Picnic
Pull out an old comforter, lay it on the ground and throw an indoor picnic. This is a fun way to spruce up sandwiches and fruit on a cold day.

Here are some fun sandwiches your kids would love.

Throw an Impromptu Dance Party
Release that energy by throwing an impromptu dance party! Use masking tape and make a dance floor. Turn up the music and get that energy OUT!

● Check out Tommy Nelson’s list of audio titles.

What is your favorite indoor activity with your kids?
