Making the most of your last month of summer – oh the possibilities!

Making the Most of Summer

Does anyone else get that panicked feeling deep down in your chest as summer starts to come to a close? I just noticed the other day that the sun is now moving in a different pattern across our yard, and it makes my heart sink a little… summer is going to end.

BUT rather than dwell on the impending school year, I choose to focus on the possibilities!! The possibility of backyard parties, hiking trips, lazy days of reading books in the sun or swinging in the hammock… the possibilities are endless!

The Bible says in Matthew 6:34, “So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for itself.” So today as I feel that panicky feeling creeping up in my chest, I will claim the promise of God’s Word… I will not worry about what tomorrow holds, but will cling to the joy of today. I WILL live in this moment… the blessed/precious moments of summer!!

So HOW will I live in the moment and enjoy the rest of summer you might ask?

Choose JOY! Not every day is perfect… in fact, if I let it, each day can turn from sunny walks in the park to hurricane gale force winds with one too many whiny “moooooommmmmmyyyyy”s. As each day progresses and I sink lower and lower into the pit of self pity, the joy of my children diminishes as well. I set the tone for my family… we WILL choose joy!

It’s the little things! We do not need to go somewhere every single day to make the most of summer. I can enjoy the scent of my sunkissed children as they play in the yard and come for a quick hug in between playing in the sand box and hunting for bugs in the grass. I can enjoy going for walks around our neighborhood as my kids ride their bikes in circles around me. I can enjoy cuddling up around a campfire with my sweet husband as the children are sound asleep in bed.

Create special moments! Yes, special moments CAN just happen when you are living for each day, BUT creating special memories for your children can turn a great summer into an unforgettable summer! Special times do not need to cost a lot. Impromptu trips to the beach, long hikes in the woods, scavenger hunts at your local nature center, random stops at the park after a grocery shopping trip… these are what make a summer exciting! If you haven’t done this with your children yet, try going on a “surprise trip.” Give them clues about where you are going. Did you pack a bathing suit? What type of food did mommy pack? What kind of shoes are you wearing? Which way is the car heading? See if they can guess where you are going… make the ride just as much fun as the destination.

Summer may be coming to a close soon, but don’t close your heart to the possibilities that remain in your summer!!
