Making a Summer Declaration!

January 1 always brings about strong commitments and convictions as New Year’s resolutions are made and lofty goals are set for the year.

This year, I’m doing the same for our summer.

I’m declaring the summer of 2012 as our family’s “Summer of God’s Great Outdoors!”

To be honest, we have not done so well with getting outside with the kiddos, but once we DO get out there…

…we always have the best time! With three boys, we NEED to venture into nature more to help them explore their adventurous side – and burn off some energy!

Summer seems to provide a change of pace for most families. Some slow down as school schedule fade away and lazy summer days set in. Other families become extremely busy with summer sports and trips and other activities.

We tend to fall into the slowing down category {as much as one can with three children ages six and under!}. We take a summer break from homeschool and try to take a family trip – nothing too fancy or involved.

But in our slowing down for the summer, we can also lose track of the hours and days and weeks and, pretty soon, summer is over and we don’t know what we did with the time!

This summer I still want to slow down, but I also want our lazy days to be intentional as well! I want our family to create wonderful summer memories that we talk about for years to come. And this summer I want most of those memories to be made outdoors!

My summer declaration involves three things…

1. I will plan outdoor-related surprises for the boys at least once a week.
2. I will listen to what the boys want to do outside and say yes more than I say no.
3. I will use God’s Word to help the boys discover the wonder of the God’s creation all around us – from our backyard to the zoo and everywhere in between!

Your family might already be outdoor enthusiasts, so your summer declaration would be something entirely different! Why not take your summer months to be more intentional about something else as a family? Here are a few ideas:

*Summer of One-on-One Time: Make weekly one-on-one dates with your kids!

*Summer of Adventure: Try a new thing with your kids every day!

*Summer of Reading: Read a new book with your kids every day – or, with older kids, a new chapter book each week! (Check out some awesome middle grade fiction from our friends at Tommy Nelson here!)

*Summer of Service: Find new and unique ways to love on others in your community and world throughout the summer!

Think about what you’ve really been wanting to do with or for your family and make the next three months all about that thing! Declare your intentions for this summer and make it a summer to remember as a family!

What will the summer of 2012 be declared in your household?
