Have No Fear, Independence is Here!

I have three boys.

Sometimes I can’t believe God entrusted me with the job of raising THREE boys because I have absolutely no idea how their minds work! I have found, though, that He is showing me just what I need as we go.

The latest challenge has to do with independence. We’ve been there with Big J before, but this independent streak in Little J is a whole different experience. With a big brother to keep up with, we’re hearing much more of “I can do it myself” and “Yes, I CAN do that” than we ever did with Big J!

With boys, independence often presents itself in situations that involve an element of adventure or danger. A trip to the zoo is not complete without both boys scaling any and every rock or ledge they find and walking tightrope style across them. If one brother is jumping from one place to another, the other brother has to jump even farther.

Honestly, these independent and adventurous spirits make me nervous. I want to help them. I want to keep them from getting hurt, both physically and emotionally.

But I just can’t do that.

I think Little J’s gung-ho attitude is God’s way of showing me these boys were created for independence and adventure, and no matter what I do, this spirit of adventure will come out. And it IS a good thing!

One of our family’s favorite verses is Joshua 1:9…

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.

It is such a great verse to have the boys learn early on, but God has shown me that I need to pay close attention to the words as well. The verse does not say, “Be careful. Don’t take any risks. You might end up somewhere on your own.”

God wants my boys to be strong and have courage. He wants them to exercise their independence, knowing He is always with them. If I don’t let them live out this verse, I am stifling their God-given adventurous spirits!

The key for us as the parents of an independent, no-fear kind of kid is to take those personality traits and help him use them for good and for God! I can only imagine the amazing plans God has for this headstrong, full-speed boy we have lovingly nicknamed “Juggernaut” {a character from X-Men who wears a helmet and runs through walls}!

How have you seen independence and courage displayed by your kiddos? How can you help them use those qualities for God?
