I just found this blog and find it interesting that several of the recent posts are things that God has been speaking to me about and I’ve actually already acted upon! I guess if I hadn’t gotten my rear in gear then this would be the kick to get started but instead it is an affirmation that the things we are doing in our home are on target!
I’ve never been an allowance person but just last Friday, we started. We explained to our girls how they would earn their money, when they would be paid and what the were to do with it. Then, we spent the evening making three containers/banks so they could easily divide their money.
I hadn’t thought about the divorce aspect of financial training- that is a good point.
I’m going to see about getting this book you mention…looks like it would be a great addition to our family library.

Hi Erin!

Funny how you and I have a few things in common and I wrote a BLOG post that echoed yours almost to the tea! or is it TEE? I married a med student and we were a couple babies in when he started his residency. The nights are tough with little ones, but even tougher when you’re married to a student who will often be stuck at the hospital while the babes are crying. Enjoy these years when he’s hanging out with the books.

I love your article and I totally agree. Isn’t the true meaning of Christmas way more magical than anything else we could come up with? My son is three and we just started reading together and making the crafts suggested in “the Truth in the Tinsel” and this has been my favorite Christmas yet! My son loves it and it’s been so wonderful to see the joy of Christmas in his eyes!

Erin, I couldn’t agree with you more!
I have found that I need to plot our course and then close my eyes to all those other clever ideas out there. Yes, there are fantastic ideas out there and yes, they can help anyone on any day. But once I set our course, I try not to look into others or else I’ll begin to add, and add and doubt and drive myself crazy, too.

Love this. My oldest son LOVES to pray as well, he is quite the prayer warrior. I have moved away from the “God is grace, God is good” prayers as well. Wild Kratts sounds like something my two would be thankful for each day as well. They love that show!

I love this post! Just had a conversation about attitude with my grumbling daughter last night and it was great to see her stop and think about the things she’s grateful for. She went from “this is the worst day ever” to “I guess this day isn’t so bad after all!”

Sunday we talked about having attitudes of gratitude in all situations and I had the kids tell me the last time they got mad and then they had to tell me something they were grateful for in that situation.

Gage: “I get mad when my brothers punch me.” Me: “and what in that situation can you be grateful for?” and Gage said “I’m grateful that I have 2 brothers, because some kids don’t even have brothers.” PRECIOUS!!! And that has been the sweetest reminder to me this week to keep my own attitude of gratitude in all situations.

Oh Amy! I love your idea of making a list for each child of things I am thankful for about them and giving it as a gift. Our oldest kiddo is a freshman in college and will be coming home for Thanksgiving one week from today. We haven’t seen him since we dropped him off in Tennessee in August. Our youngest is a sophomore in high school. She is such a delight and has been a trooper adjusting to being an “only” child. There has never been a better time to tell them how thankful I am for them.

Thanks for a great post! As mom to 7, I can certainly vouch for everything you said here. It is fun to have the opportunity to be creative with good behavior rewards to suit individual uniqueness. For example,one of my daughters does very well with verbal encouragement so I take extra measures to praise her individually and in front of others. My son loves to have a written note so he can take it out and read it on occasion. Encouraging words from other moms is so refreshing.

That key ring is such a great idea! And what a neat school. I’ve never heard of one where you went to school part of the time and stayed home the rest. Very nice.

As Christians, depending on the circles we run in, there can be tremendous pressure to do things the “right” way (homeschool, unschool, Christian school, etc). I agree with you–just follow God’s leading and He’ll show you what’s right for YOUR family; which might not be the same as the next family.

I have a very good friend who has always stayed on the “straight and narrow”; she loves Jesus very much and she went to public school K-12 *GASP!*. God is bigger than all that.

My little girl is in TKD so it’s great to hear about other kids doing the same. My oldest child has no interest in any outside activity. We tried gymnastics for awhile but that didn’t stick. She loves being home and writing so I’m taking that as her unique activity even though there aren’t really lessons available for her.

I’m also a mom of 2 boys. Mine are now 8 & 10.

AND we began homeschooling in January. I’m also not the best when it comes to routines, but I find that though getting them started can be a pain, I’ve found that the boys do better when they know what to expect and when to expect it.

Thanks for sharing. Something I just discovered this year, that I’ve learned more from since January to now, than in the last 17 years of studying is something called CBD (Chronological Bible Discipleship).

CBD is about learning the whole story of the Bible so you can share the Gospel in story form, and it helps with the understanding of the WHOLE Story of HIS Story as well. At the prompting of God, and after much prayer and thought, I began homeschooling our two boys (ages 8 & 10) in January of this year. It has been almost overwhelming at times, but I’m determined to obey what I believe God has called us to do for our boys.

I write and blog (www.motherof2angie.blogspot.com) as well. I would like some pointers/suggestions on how to balance your calling/career with family life. I’m having a bit more trouble with it now that we are all home all the time. The separating my writing time from, school time, from family time. Seems all my dedicated time gets eaten up, or I feel guilty when I do take it.

We begin a co-op this week, so that will help a little, but then come the more work that goes with it.

Hey Krista!

I tell them God made dinosaurs. And that they aren’t alive anymore. They are only 5 and 2. That’s as far as we’ve gone in that story! As they get older we’ll be able to talk about it more. But for now, I think that’s enough for them.

I’ve seen a few resources that explain extinction & dinosaurs, etc but I’m no expert. I know answersingenesis.org has some kids’ movies, etc. I hope that helps!

Sara: Both. I played a lot with them when we first started. I helped them think through where to put the animals, etc. I specifically remember sitting down in a chair nearby to read. They asked me to play and I told them no b/c I wanted to see THEM pretend and not wait for me to lead!

Hi Brandi,
My husband and I use to go to Cross Point & loved it!! but God lead us in a different direction with life & our now 3 children, ages 3, 2, & 7months. However, I have always followed you & Pete’s blog and it amazes me the ways you all find such creative ways to spend time and make lasting memories with your boys. I always thought 3 boys would be such fun, which I am sure it is. Boys is what I always wanted & it just made sense that b/c I wanted 3 boys… that is what God would give me, (haha) but He also knew how much my hubby wanted a daddy’s girl, so for my hubby the 3rd time was a charm & for me 2 out of 3 isn’t bad. So, I am nervous but excited as I start building a mother-daughter relationship. Well, I just wanted to drop in and say hello and tell you that you touch more lives than you probably realize. God has truely blessed the Cross Point ministry and have touched so many people through it.

I loved this article. I grew up doing a lot of scheduled activities – dance, groups, sports, etc. but I missed having family time. My husband and I have 3 children now and our favorite thing to do is spend our time together as a family whether it be playing at the park, watching a movie together, doing Bible study, talking about anything and everything or just plain doing nothing. I love that my kids can go outside and use their imaginations playing with something as simple as sticks and rocks. I agree life doesn’t need to be as busy and hectic.

Very inspirational! Thank you for sharing. Doing the Bible in90 Days had SO greatly helped me connect the dots and fill in the missing pieces. I was raised in a wonderful Christian family and community, attended church and did many Bible studies. Then wandered away ~ just like those of Biblical times. So glad to have found that I can come back and make God a priority in my life and connect w/ His word.

I need a Bible study that includes daily reading to keep me focused and make it a priority. That’s why I love Beth Moore’s studies in particular- They always help me completely immerse myself in the Bible when I’m doing them. When I do a study that doesn’t include much scripture, I feel cheated somehow, and a little bit suspicious of the basis of the author’s “wisdom.”

Wow…this hit my heart completely. It is so hard to let go. You are right, it is ingrained in my soul to hold on and try to protect my children from the world. My son is embarking on a journey…he leaves today. He is going with a school group, but my heart is truly sad. He will be gone for over a week without any means of contacting home. (only if there is an emergency). Letting go is so hard. I am sitting here worrying about it all–whether he will make the right decisions, that he does not get into any trouble, that he does not get injured or hurt….the list goes on and on. I guess it is my job as a mother to worry too. I have tried to raise him to the best of my ability..but I still worry. All I can do at this point is put my trust in the Lord.
I am so glad that I read your blog today , Kathy. It did soothe my soul. Blessings to you my friend.

I have purchased curriculum unit 1 and 2, which I love. I have called and patiently waited for the next unit since January. This information that it is not yet being produced saddens me. This is part of my school curriculum and was looking forward to finishing the year off with it. Instead, I had to put together a unit that was not as adequate for the needs of my pre-schoolers. I was thrilled to know that there would be 4 units that would take me through the entire year. Now, I have started something without a finish in sight. When I purchased this curriculum it was on the basis of having a full year. What do I do with just 2 units? It feels very incomplete. I may have to change my whole curriculum due to this fact for next year because it wasn’t easy trying to implement something else, something very different than what the kids were enjoying and used to. I invested in this product with the notion that I would have a complete year. So, as you can see, I am very saddened and somewhat disappointed. But such is life and I will get over it. Just thought you should know that I was patiently waiting but I have to think about planning for next year. Is it possible to get a refund on the grounds of misleading advertising? The Tommy Nelson package states when the units were to be released. Which is the very reason I invested in it. Don’t get me wrong, I love the curriculum but it is incomplete. When I start something I like to finish it. Thank you.

Hello. I’m having technical issues. We found a pamphlet inside one of your movies that had different ways of connecting with Tommy Nelson Kids and I can’t seem to locate them. Can’t find your Facebook page, and your iPhone app doesn’t exist.

Did you cancel both? I don’t twitter so I dunno if that works or not. About the only thing that did was the web address. Just wondering because my kids was slightly disappointed when I couldn’t find either. Any help would be appreciated.

I am very busy with this subject at the moment.

My 3 year old, very bright boy, has also a very determined personality. So he won’t listen. Ever. Time-out helps sometimes, but there are days when he had to go even 6 times in a row for a couple of minutes.

I wish I managed things in a calm way, make him learn to listen at least once, have things work out peacefully.

i wish I give him a good education, find the right balance…but how?

My question is…is how do you handle discipline with the “terrible twos”? Time out doesn’t seem to work anymore so my son has experienced standing in the corner. Hello. My daughter received a gigi (Gigi and the royal pink circus) movie for her birthday. When we put it in the dvd makes an awful sound. Plays the first part of the movie and then goes silent in the middle and then continues back to normal half way through the last story. What Can I do? I didn’t want to go to the person who bought it but we really do enjoy the movie.
would love any sort of direction to get one that works properly.

We love your GIGI and Hermie movies. One Problem tho’–my son tried to access the DVD-Rom activities on my laptop. It is equipped with WIN7, so I dont know if I need an update from the CD itself or something else is wrong. It hovers on the “Please insert this disc into your computer…” page and then goes right back to the root menu instead of the coloring pages and extras. Can you tell me what the issue is here and how to fix it? My son was really excited and then disappointed about these applications of his Stanley the Stinkbug movie….

I purchased the Read and Share curriculum unit one at the CPC conference in Orlando this year. When I got home, the DVD with the short video clips won’t play. I love everything else about the curriculum and have been using it for two weeks, but would really like to get a copy of that DVD that works. Please contact me if you could send me a copy of this.

This is a beautiful post and a wonderful reminder to me. Sometimes I look back and think God MUST get tired of beating me over the head with the SAME lesson over and over and over…, but He doesn’t. He is always gracious, never impatient, always loving and guiding. This is exactly the kind of mom I want to be for my children.

I purchased 2 copies of Tim McGraw’s book ‘Love Your Heart’.
They are horrible-they are printed incorrectly. They are missing pages, pages they have are out of order and several of the pages are repeated. I purchased these for Christmas presents and gave them to my 2 sons to read with their daughters. What a disappointment!! What am I supposed to do with these unreadable books??? I purchased them online and cannot seem to get in touch with anyone who wants to take responsibility for this horrible product.
If I could get in touch with Mr. McGraw I would let him know but he seems to be very insulated from public contact, the online book store wants nothing to do with it. I had to search to find this publisher site. Any suggestions??

My daughter received the read and Share Bible DVD series: The Jesus Series for Christmas. The Dvd cracked when we took it out of the case. I guess this is our problem, but thought that maybe we could get a replacement?

To whom it may concern,
My daughter has noticed in her Tommy Nelson Bible that she is missing Psalms149: and up , No Proverbs, and only half of Ecclesiastes. We purchased this bible a while back and she didn’t notice it until sword drills at Sunday School.
It is Pink Prince ICB International Children’s Bible – with the diamond rhinestone clip. We would like to have a complete bible for her and wonder if this was just a bad run or what happened to her bible?

I loved reading your mission statement. My kids love your Hermie and Friends stuff. Several years ago, my daughter received a Hermie Bible for Christmas and loved it. This past summer she was reading it in her special spot outside and forgot to bring it in and it got rained on. We both love the little seeds in it written by Max Lucado. I have tried to replace it going to the normal places. Is there anyway you might have one left over somewhere???? She was so upset and I keep telling her I am trying to replace it!!!

When I was small some favorite traditions had been seeing productions of The Nutcracker and a Christmas Carol each and every year. Also, this is an obvious 1, but picking out the Christmas tree together was often a extremely enjoyable family factor… And watching Christmas specials on TV: A Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Frosty the Snowman. And “It’s A Fantastic Life” was an additional one that I often watched around the holidays… In the event you don’t have the budget to go see the play, I believe reading “A Christmas Carol” – either to yourself or out loud in a group – would be nice. Oh, and on volunteering: I spent Thanksgiving volunteering and thought it was a fantastic method to spend the day. If I weren’t going to be out of town for Christmas I would attempt to find somewhere to volunteer… maybe next year.

Jesus Calling has been a very inspirational devotional, there were times when I felt so down and discourage, and I found just the right word in the devotional which lift me up. It was amazing.
It also help my yo grow in my relationship with the Lord.

After I show to my daughter the devotional Jesus Calling for kids, she loved it. She ask that present for Christmas.
