I had someone tell me the other day, “I’m so glad that I’m not raising kids in this day and age.” I know they didn’t mean it to be discouraging, but it kind of hit me deep. The emotions of doom and dread and thoughts like, “wow, yeah, it is pretty bad” came sweeping in like a flood.
But then I remembered – God knew I’d be raising these children of mine, during this exact time in history. Things may be different today than they were 20-30 years ago, but the same God is still on the throne.
So instead of getting discouraged by politics, attacks on religious freedom, and the downward spiral away from morality, let’s instead move forward with hope.
What do we know about 2017?
God is sovereign.
We have a secure foundation in Christ if we know Him as Savior.
We have a heavenly home.
We can raise godly children, in godless times.
There are millions of people that love Jesus and want to see positive change.
There are kind (extremely kind) people in this world.
And we have something that no one can take away from us – the power of prayer! Our children need to know that their prayers can make a difference.
As my friend Callie says, “God chooses to use our prayers as a catalyst to accomplish His work on earth.”
The devotional, I Can Learn to Pray, is a great way to encourage your child’s prayer life. The more your child talks with God in prayer – bringing Him their joys, hurts, confessions, praise and thanks – the stronger their faith will become!
My prayer for 2017 is that Christians would truly let Jesus shine through them to a dark world. That grace would penetrate their hearts and overflow from their lips. I pray that we wouldn’t be secret agent Christians. That we would boldly proclaim that Christ is real in our lives.
Would you join me? I’m not sure what 2017 will bring, but I do know that if I’m tucked away in the center of God’s will, I will experience true joy and security.
A Prayer for 2017
Heavenly Father, we desperately need you. Daily, we choose social media over reading our Bible. We starve our prayer life and feed our pride. We all fall short of your glory, yet you love us just the same! Your unconditional love is amazing. Thank you for allowing Jesus to pay for our sin in full. Our debt is paid and Jesus’s blood has provided a way for us to be redeemed.
May 2017 be a year of personal revival in the hearts of your children. May we experience you in a fervent way through the reading of your Word and the fellowship of a renewed prayer life.
May we not get sucked into fighting the battles, but let you fight them for us. May we trust you for the best for our lives, instead of trying to write our own story. Give us strength and wisdom to face any unforeseeable hurt and pain. May we not grow bitter against you because of it.
Let us reach out to the widow and the orphan. Help us to have a heart for giving to the needy and forgotten. We thank you for our service men and women and their families, who sacrifice so much for our freedom.
You are the light that will cut through the darkest of nights. May we choose to obediently follow you and say, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Strengthen our marriages. Bring wayward spouses home. Convict the prodigal children to return to your feast of abundant living. May our children see you in our everyday lives through the tenderness we share. May we yell a whole lot less, and give life-giving words instead.
We want to thank and praise you for all you’ve done in 2016. We’ve had our share of trials, but we’ve had our moments of pure joy as well. We wouldn’t be able to feel joy, if we did not feel pain.
In Jesus’ Name, amen
