A Night Night Prayer for Us ALL

4a

Today we are thrilled to have Amy Parker, author of  A Night Night Prayer, as a guest blogger!

This month Tommy Nelson re-releases my first—and favorite—little board book, A Night Night Prayer. It has been updated with adorable alpaca art, giving a whole new look to this sweet, simple prayer.

Every time I see the book, I’m still taken back to one particular bedtime in 2007. My fiery redhead was fighting sleep with all the stamina his little three-year-old body could muster. Tossing, turning, talking— NON. Stop.

You know the drill.

And me? I spent my days working from home and chasing a three-year-old around. I would’ve given anything for a little rest myself. But I had a long list waiting . . . if only I could get those little blue eyes to close.

After the umpteenth encore of “Brahms’s Lullaby,” I had an idea. Or—I believe—an idea was given to me.

Through the window, I could see that the moonlight had just begun to fall on the trees, and the wind was gently rocking the limbs and the leaves.

“Look,” I said softly, “see those trees?”

“Mm-hm.”

“Even those trees need their rest,” I explained. “See how the wind is rocking them to sleep?”

“Mm-hmm.”

The words in my mind started to flow. Some of them I whispered aloud.

“Shh, the trees are sleeping. . . .”

And some of the words I just repeated again and again in my mind so that I wouldn’t forget.

Before long, just like that, we were both sound asleep. (So much for that list.)

Sometime in the middle of the night, I jumped up and wrote those words into verses. I later polished them, submitted them, and A Night Night Prayer was born.

Seven years later, people are still giving this book as baby shower and birthday gifts for little ones all over the world (quite literally).

Why is that exactly?

Part of the reason, I think, is that we all could use a little rest.

We’re all weary. Tired. Worn slap out.

We do too much. Sleep too little. Rush. Rinse. Repeat.

But what if we took that short, simple prayer to heart? What if we realized that everything needs its rest to be its best?

Since the beginning of the universe, our Creator has said, “Look, rest is good. Rest is holy.”

And if it’s important to the all-powerful Creator of the world—the Creator of us—shouldn’t it be important to us too?

Even the mommies. Even the daddies. And yes, even the fiery little redheads.

So today, this month, celebrate the release of my new little book with me. Not with a Pinterest party. Not with a cleverly crafted card. Not even with a home-baked, organic, non-GMO cake.

 But with rest.

Prop up your feet, watch the trees sway in the moonlight, and let the Creator of the universe gently, softly rock you, His child, to sleep.
