Friday is National Cuddle Up Day! (who knew?!) So I’ve been thinking. . . What better way is there to spend a snowy (or chilly) afternoon than cuddled up with your kids, reading books by a warm fire? (Okay, we have a wood stove, but there’s still a fire inside!)
Before you settle in under the blanket, you have to set the scene. You will need a mug of hot cocoa for each person (put some peppermint creamer in mine, please), a blanket big enough for a crowd, cozy slippers (I can’t help it; my toes get cold), and most importantly, a big stack of books. It would be helpful to put your books in a basket or container to make the logistics a little easier.
Here’s what’s in our reading basket this winter:
1. Good Good Father and Good Good Father for Little Ones
2. Look I’m Reading Bible Storybook (my 6-year-old loves this one)
3. God Bless My Friends
4. I Love You Just Because
5. Jesus Calling My First Bible Storybook and Jesus Calling Bible Storybook Deluxe Edition<
6. I Am
7. The Parable Treasury (My favorite on the list)
8. Win or Lose, I Love You
9. The Little Critter series by Mercer Mayer (okay, I have two favorites)
10. Brave Girls Bible Stories (my 9-year-old’s favorite)
And of course, no read aloud list would be complete without our A1 favorite series ever, the Little House books by Laura Ingalls Wilder. We’ve read through the whole series twice and I suspect we’ll read it one or two more before my girls grow up. They never get tired of hearing about Mary and Laura.
All of the above are terrific read-alouds with just enough Bible stories sprinkled in. They will remind your kids of familiar tales while also introducing them to new favorites.
There is so much evidence that reading aloud to your kids is beneficial to their language development, reading skills, and success in school, but the main reason to read high quality Christian-themed books is to fill their little hearts with Jesus and lots of love.
Celebrate National Cuddle Up Day this week and start a new tradition you can carry through the winter. I challenge you to cuddle up with your little people and some good books today!
