10 Bible Verses to Pray Over Your Son

We're raising boys to be warriors to God's Kingdom each and every day.
A mom’s prayer for her son can last a lifetime.

I am the mother of three sons, ages 6-27 years old. I’ve raised two sons from newborn to adulthood, and it’ll be a while until the third leaves home. As a mom of older sons, I understand clearly that they do grow up and make decisions about God—and their relationship with Him—all on their own. Also, the way they love and serve God impacts future generations. That’s why it’s important to pray faithfully for our sons. A mom’s prayers invite God to actively get involved in her son’s life. Here are 10 things we can pray:

1. Lord, help my son to live according to Your Word, the Bible. It’s Your Word that will keep him on the path of purity.

How can a young person stay on the path of purity? By living according to your word. Psalm 119:9 NIV

2. Lord, help my son trust You and submit his ways to You. Let him not try to figure everything out on his own, but instead always turn to You for guidance, knowing You will always lead him in the right direction with his life.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

3. Lord, help my son seek You above all else. Let him know that when he chooses to live Your way—the right way—that You will give him everything he needs.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. Matthew 6:33 NLT

4. Lord, help my son to invite you into every space in his heart and life, so that You will produce good fruit. Help him remember that he doesn’t have to tackle being loving, joyful, peaceful—and so much more—on his own, but it is Your work within his heart that comes out.

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things! Galatians 5:22-23 NLT

5. Lord, may my son turn to you to transform how he thinks. Help him not be drawn to the behaviors of the world, but instead, may he turn to You to be transformed, and may He actively seek Your will.

Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 NLT

6. Lord, may by son put on Your armor to stand firm. There’s a war raging for his soul. Help him to realize that You’ve provided everything needed to fight effectively—namely Yourself.

Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and- blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:11-12

7. Lord, may my son know Your word and be quick to do what it says. May he not be deceived by thinking that knowing it is enough. Help him to be quick to act!

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. James 1:22

8. Lord, may my son have a thankful heart. May he cling to Your everlasting love and rejoice in Your goodness.

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Psalm 118:1 NLT

9. Lord, may my son find courage as He realizes You go before him. May he find peace and courage as he turns his attention away from the concerns of this world and instead focuses his gaze on You, knowing You will never fail Him.

So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the LORD your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you. Deuteronomy 31:6 NLT

10. Lord, may my son believe in You so that he may have eternal life. I’m thankful, Jesus, that You made a way for him to live with You for eternity through Your sacrifice. May my son accept, and cling to, this free gift for it’s more important than anything else in life!

For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

May our hearts be full as we pray these Scripture prayers for our sons, and may we continue to be diligent in praying them. Our prayers can do more than we think or imagine. May we never forget the power of inviting Jesus into every part of our sons’ lives.
